To improve utilisation, the company targeted the common complaint that car washing is hard and expensive, and decided to offer a public wash service from the spare space. The model combines fast automatic washing with self-service detailing to meet different drivers’ needs and turn dormant space into active income.

Since the trial began, the wash area has handled more than 60 vehicles a day, with queues at peak times. “The automatic machine is fast; ten minutes after work and it’s done. The self-service unit lets me clean the interior, and the value is good,” said Mr Li, a driver who lives nearby. A manager at the bus company did the sums: “The equipment runs reliably and consumable costs are low. After water, power and maintenance, it brings a useful net profit each month, and it strengthens the depot’s service to the community.”
